Winter in Colorado

While attending a friend’s wedding, I was able to experience the winter conditions of the Colorado mountains.

I was able to take a couple photo walks on the trip, and I used it as an opportunity to test out my then newly-purchased Fujifilm XT30. I was shooting with the 18-55 kit lens. While I took close to a hundred photos, the vast majority of these were just me experimenting with the lens, different focusing techniques, and Fuji’s beloved film simulations. Of the images that I took, these are the ones that stood out to me as worth keeping.

KEEP OUT!

The first was an abandoned garage/apartment behind the home I stayed in. I tried to experiment with the frozen reeds as a foreground element, but I don’t know that it worked as I would have liked. I also wished I had stepped back a bit further to have more space above the top of the garage. My favorite part of this building was the old wooden “KEEP OUT” sign.

I really wish he had his hat on.

Next up is a picture taken in Union Station of a man sketching. What made me want to take his photo was his vibrant yellow sock visible in his medical boot. It was such a strong contrast to the dark colors of his suit and tie/pocket square that it immediately caught my eye. I didn’t stick around to see what he was sketching, but I will say, if his art was as stylish as his fashion, it was probably a cool drawing. To me, the appeal of this image is the story. The more I look at it, the more I want to know about this man. How did he hurt his foot? How long has he been drawing, is it a new hobby or long-time passion? And of course, I wish I could have gotten a shot of him with the hat on!

I could have framed this better.

Third is an interesting sculpture in a Denver mall. There isn’t much to say about it other than I found it interesting and wanted to capture it.

An old workhorse.

The fourth picture is of the view from the wedding venue, and in particular an old GMC truck that sat overlooking the neighborhood below. With this image, I’ve played around with the editing quite a bit, but can never settle on anything that looks good to me. I like the picture, but it always seems as if the color is off.

A pop of color against the cold winter sky.

Finally we have the Union Station sign. Here again, it was the pop of color that made me want to take the picture. Unfortunately, I was moving while shooting and couldn’t stop to frame the sign as I would have liked, but I think the end result still shows what stood out to me.
